Vol. 472 No. 2

Written Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

Rory O'Hanlon

Ceist:

119 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for the Environment the source of funding for town and village sewerage schemes in the Border region; the amount provided under each heading in 1996; the conditions, if any, attached to the funding provision; if so, if he will give details of these conditions; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22871/96]

The following sewerage schemes in the Border region, with a total estimated cost of £78 million, have been included for funding under the water and sewerage programme, 1996: County Cavan — Ballyjamesduff and Virginia; County Louth — Dundalk and Drogheda; County Monaghan — Carrickmacross.

These schemes are eligible for 100 per cent capital funding from my Department and EU funds.

In addition, under the INTERREG programme for the Border region, the following sewerage schemes, with a total estimated cost of £6.3 million, have been approved for the period of the programme 1994-99: County Leitrim — Newtowngore, Keshcarrigan, Fenagh and Carrick-on-Shannon; County Donegal — Muff, Ballybofey-Stranorlar; County Cavan — Ballyconnell; County Louth — Carlingford.

Under the small schemes programme, a further £592,000 has been provided in 1996 to assist eight sewerage schemes in the Border region. These are additional to the 50 water and sewerage schemes to be constructed over the period 1994-99 for towns and villages in the Border counties costing an estimated £4 million, £1.2 million in 1996, under the INTERREG programme. The level of grant under the Small Scheme Programme, including the 50 schemes for towns and villages under INTERREG is £750,000 or 75 per cent of the cost, whichever is the lesser.

Apart from the general conditions set out in the relevant national and EU Regulations and procedures, there are no special conditions applying to the funding of sewerage schemes in Border areas.
