Vol. 472 No. 2

Written Answers. - Special School Placement.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

135 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education when a person (details supplied) in Dublin 1 will be given a place in a class in a special school in view of the fact that she is currently attending the institution on two mornings a week but does not do school work. [22925/96]

In the particular circumstances of the child concerned, the decision of the professional staff dealing with the case was that a gradual introduction to the special school was required by means of an introductory therapeutic transitional programme.

For this reason, the child is now attending a therapeutic programme, which is part of the services located at the school concerned, for two mornings each week. The intention is that the child's participation in the programme, which includes an educational element, will be expanded with a view to full enrolment in a school programme in the very near future. My Department will continue to monitor progress in this matter.
