Vol. 472 No. 6

Written Answers. - Driving Regulations.

Mary Wallace

Ceist:

105 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for the Environment when the regulations on driving for people with epilepsy will be changed to bring them into line with the United Kingdom and other European countries; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23868/96]

The EU second directive on driving licences set out the conditions which must be complied with for a driving licence to be granted to a person suffering from epilepsy. In implementing the directive, member states must, as a minimum, apply those conditions. The requirements relating to epilepsy laid down in the Road Traffic (Licensing of Drivers) Regulations, 1989, which was developed on the basis of medical advice, conform with the relevant provisions of the directive and I do not propose to change them.
