Declan Bree

Ceist:

126 Mr. Bree asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that Castlerock national school, Aclare, County Sligo, has been listed by the INTO as seriously sub-standard; if so, the action, if any, she intends to take to bring the condition of the school up to an acceptable standard; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [23749/96]

I am aware that Castlerock national school, Aclare, County Sligo, has been listed by the INTO.

The current position is that the school, applied for grant aids for refurbishment in September 1996. My Department has asked the Office of Public Works to detail the works required and when this report has been received, the school management will be contacted.

127 Mr. Bree asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that St. Joseph's national school, Collooney, County Sligo, has been listed by the INTO as seriously sub-standard; if so, the action, if any, she intends to take to bring the condition of the school up to an acceptable standard; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [23750/96]

I am aware that St. Joseph's school, Collooney, County Sligo has been listed by the INTO.

My Department has no record of the school having applied for improvement works. If an application is received for specific works, the matter will be considered in my Department.

128 Mr. Bree asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that Carrowreagh national school, Bunaniddan, County Sligo, has been listed by the INTO as seriously sub-standard; if so, the action, if any, she intends to take to ensure that a new central school is constructed; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [23751/96]

I have been aware that the Carrowreagh national school is currently housed in unsuitable accommodation and that the school hopes to amalgamate with a nearby school. For this reason I included a project in my Department's 1996 programme to plan a replacement building to house the amalgamated schools.

The current position on the project is that the school authorities have recently submitted details of the proposed site for the project and these are currently been examined by my Department's architectural staff. If the proposed site is suitable the next stage is the preparation of sketch scheme drawings in order that the school authorities may apply for planning permission. Every effort will be made to advance the project through the various planning stages.

When all the planning work has been completed, a decision on the tender and contract process will be taken in the light of other priority projects and available financial resources.

129 Mr. Bree asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that Sligo School Project, The Mall, Sligo, has been listed by the INTO as seriously sub-standard; if so, when her Department intends to provide funding for the refurbishment and purchase of the premises at St. Anne's Place for the Sligo School Project; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [23764/96]

I have been aware that the Sligo School Project is currently housed in unsuitable accommodation. For this reason I included a project in my Department's 1995 capital programme to refurbish the former St. Anne's building in order to accommodate the school project.

All the planning work is now complete and the contract documentation is ready. A decision on the timing of the tender process will be taken in the light of existing contractual commitments for 1997 and funds which will be available in 1997. Both of these matters are under consideration at present and I expect that the process will be completed shortly. The Deputy can be assured that every effort will be made to get the project under way as quickly as possible.

130 Mr. Bree asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that Rockfield national school, Coolaney, County Sligo, has been listed by the INTO as seriously sub-standard; the action, if any, her Department intends to take to bring the condition of the school up to an acceptable standard; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [23765/96]

I am aware of the listing of Rockfield national school by the INTO.

The current position regarding the school is that my Department sanctioned a grant in 1995 towards the cost of replacing the windows at the school. These works have been completed and payment of the grant issued to the school authorities in August 1996.
My Department's primary buildings branch has no other application from the school authorities for any improvement works at the school.
