Vol. 472 No. 6
183 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Social Welfare his views on a proposal that a social welfare clearance certificate be attached to public service vehicle driving licence applications. [23927/96]
I am favourably disposed, in principle, to proposals put forward by unions representing taxi and hackney drivers, that applications for public service vehicle licences and renewals should be accompanied by a social welfare clearance certificate.
Such a system has the potential, both for self-policing the industry and as a deterrent to those who might otherwise be tempted to abuse the social welfare system.
I understand that the proposal would require legislative changes for which my colleague the Minister for the Environment would be responsible.
I am arranging to have the Deputy's interest in this matter brought to the Minister's attention.
