Vol. 472 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. - Labour Force Survey.

John Ellis

Ceist:

1 Mr. Ellis asked the Taoiseach the number of houses surveyed in each county as part of the recent Labour Force Survey. [23760/96].

The Labour Force Survey, which is conducted in April of each year, covers a national representative sample of about 4.5 per cent of all households. This makes it the largest regular sample survey in the State.

The preliminary results for April 1996, which were published in October, were based on a sample of over 46,000 households. I propose to circulate in the Official Report the following statement showing the number of sample households surveyed in each county and region:

Number of households included in each county and region in the preliminary 1996 Labour Force Survey results.

What was the balance between urban and rural areas?

I can confirm the figure for each county. In the case of County Leitrim, the number of households surveyed was 490 and, in the case of Sligo, 988. In both those counties the number was 6 per cent, above the national norm of 4.5 per cent. The CSO tried to achieve as equal a balance as possible between urban and rural areas.
