Written Answers. - Detention of Fishing Vessels.

Peadar Clohessy

Ceist:

25 Mr. Clohessy asked the Minister for the Marine the number of fishing vessels arrested since February 1996; the nature of the charges brought; and the penalties imposed. [23807/96]

A total of 30 fishing vessels have been detained since February 1996. Five were detained by Department of the Marine sea fishery officers and 25 by the Naval Service. The offences for which these vessels were detained include: non-completion of logbook; under recording of catch; retention of under-size fish; failure to report entry-exit; illegal fishing; no capacity plans; and illegal nets.

Four of the vessels detained were issued with official warnings. Penalties totalling £1,112,529 were imposed in respect of 17 cases which have so far come before the courts. Court proceedings are still pending in respect of the remaining nine cases.
