Ceist:

44 Mr. L. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Finance if the post of Deputy Secretary exists in the main general service grades; if so, the numbers and in which Department each post is located; the number of Deputy Secretary posts held in 1986; the relevant Departments each were assigned to at that time; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23900/96]

The post of Deputy Secretary has generally been phased out in the general service grades. The Government decided recently, given the exceptional circumstances existing in the Department of Justice, to make an appointment at Deputy Secretary level in that Department for a limited period.

In addition, the pay scales formerly applicable to Deputy Secretaries apply to the director general of the social welfare services office in the Department of Social Welfare and to the Chief Inspector of Taxes in the Office of the Revenue Commissioners, as well as to a number of senior professional posts in the Civil Service.

As regards 1986, there were eight Deputy Secretaries serving as follows:
