Vol. 472 No. 6

Written Answers. - Needs and Abilities Report.

Mary Wallace

Ceist:

64 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Health the status of reviews, if any, within his Department on the Needs and Abilities report. [23851/96]

The national intellectual disability database, the establishment of which was recommended in the report of the review group on mental handicap services, Needs and Abilities, is now providing my Department, the health boards, and the mental handicap agencies with information on both the current and future needs of people with a mental handicap over a five year period. This information will enable my Department to review, on an ongoing basis, the implementation of the policy set out in the review group's report.

I would hope to continue the development of further services for persons with mental handicap based on the needs identified by the database. My priority is to ensure that provision can be made to meet the needs of those who are currently without a service.
