Vol. 472 No. 6

Written Answers. - School Placement.

Ned O'Keeffe

Ceist:

71 Mr. E. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Health if he will investigate the case of a person (details supplied) in County Cork who is hyperactive and who is not able to avail of his right to education; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that a school in County Tipperary was prepared to accept this child but then refused; if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that the Southern Health Board has been involved in this case; and if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that this child is only 11 years old and is becoming very depressed. [23936/96]

I have made inquiries with the Southern Health Board concerning this child and I am aware that some difficulties exist concerning his educational requirements. I am anxious that the difficulties and uncertainties concerning the child's future educational requirements will be quickly resolved. All agencies concerned with the child's welfare are co-operating closely in deciding upon suitable arrangements for the child. A case conference was held recently to consider a number of initiatives and I am hopeful that a suitable placement can shortly be finalised. I will communicate with the Deputy directly when specific details have been worked out between all agencies concerned with the child's welfare.
