Vol. 473 No. 1

Written Answers. - Mental Handicap Services.

Michael P. Kitt

Ceist:

98 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Minister for Health the number of mentally handicapped persons in each county in the Western Health Board area who are on a waiting list for either a day care or a residential service; the proposals, if any, there are in respect of these services in the future for the mentally handicapped in County Galway; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24394/96]

Information on the number of persons with a mental handicap awaiting placement in either residential or day services is currently being compiled from the national intellectual disability database as part of the preparation of the assessment of need for the development of services to persons with a mental handicap.

I hope to continue the development of further services for persons with a mental handicap based on the needs identified by the database. My priority is to ensure that provision can be made to meet the needs of those who are currently without a service.

I will arrange for the information requested by the Deputy to be forwarded to him as soon as the development plan is published.
