Batt O'Keeffe

Ceist:

246 Mr. B. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that pupils at a school (details supplied) in County Cork will not be allowed to play in the school yard after Christmas in view of the fact that they will not be covered by insurance due to the terrible condition of the yard; and if she intends to have remedial action taken at the earliest possible date in this regard. [24461/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 245 and 246 together.

A building project for this school has been included in my Department's capital building programme for 1996. The current position with regard to the proposed extension at the school is that the planning work is completed and the contract documentation is now ready. A decision on the timing of the tender and contract processes must be taken in light of existing contractual commitments and the funds which will be available in 1997. Both of these matters are under consideration at present and I expect that the process will be completed shortly. At that stage, I will be in a position to take a decision on the tender process for the school. Improvement works to the school yard are included in the project.
