Vol. 473 No. 1

Written Answers. - Petitions to Minister.

Éamon Ó Cuív

Ceist:

271 Éamon Ó Cuív asked the Minister for Justice when a decision will be made on a petition made to her on behalf of a person (details supplied) in County Galway in May 1996. [24418/96]

Consideration of any petition on hands is being carried out in accordance with the criteria indicated in the High Court judgment in the case of Patrick J. Brennan v. The Minister for Justice, Ireland and the Attorney General. This judgment clearly indicates that petitions should be granted only in “the rarest of circumstances” or “exceptional cases”. I will be issuing new guidelines shortly which will assist both members of the public and public representatives to ascertain whether there is a case for a petition or not.

The petition referred to by the Deputy is one of several which are on hand at present.
