Vol. 473 No. 1

Written Answers. - Equal Treatment Arrears.

Mary Wallace

Ceist:

284 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Social Welfare the date on which a person (details supplied) in County Meath applied for equal treatment arrears; the names and ages of the children applied for on that date; the amounts of arrears paid by his Department on behalf of each of those children; the way in which these amounts were computed; and whether the original amounts of child dependant allowance were not paid on behalf of those children for the dates in question and thereby are now due to the person in view of the fact that this person has been paid the child dependant increase but not original child dependant allowance in spite of the fact that these children were included on the 1992 form and were also included on all Department of Social Welfare medicals over the same period. [24364/96]

On 2 September 1992 the person concerned applied for equal treatment arrears on her unemployment benefit and disability benefit claims for herself and her four children. She was subsequently paid £8,964.20 which included an amount of £2,351.74 for her two eligible children, both born prior to the introduction of the equality legislation in November 1986. This latter sum comprises payment in respect of one child from 4 January 1985 to 2 April 1985 and two children from 3 April 1985 to 15 November 1986. The total amount paid represents her full entitlement under equal treatment legislation.

The person concerned did not claim an increase in disability benefit in respect of her child dependants from 15 November 1986. However, she was invited to do so earlier this year and was awarded the appropriate increases. It has been decided to award the increases from November 1986 or the dates of the birth of the children from after that date as appropriate. The arrears payment will issue to her shortly.
