Éamon Ó Cuív

Ceist:

288 Éamon Ó Cuív asked the Minister for Social Welfare whether he proposes extending double child benefit to multiple births of twins as well as multiple births involving three or more children; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24613/96]

Mary Wallace

Ceist:

290 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will review his position in relation to the payment of child benefit to the parents of twins in a like manner to the parents of other multiple births as previously promised by him prior to taking office. [24655/96]

It is proposed to take Questions Nos. 287, 288 and 290 together. I refer the Deputies to my reply to Question No. 199 on Tuesday, 5 November 1996, in which I indicated that the cost of paying double child benefit in respect of twins would be in the region of £8.5 million in a full year. As the Deputies are aware this year I increased the grant in respect of the birth of twins from £200 to £500 and I introduced a new payment of £500 which is payable on the twins reaching the ages of four and 12.

Joe Walsh

Ceist:

289 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Social Welfare the total number on non-contributory old age pensioners; and the number in receipt of this pension at the full rate. [24645/96]

At the end of October 1996 there were 101, 290 old age non-contributory pensioners, of whom 65, 441, 64.6 per cent, were on full rate pensions.
