Vol. 473 No. 1

Written Answers. - Marriage Registration.

Rory O'Hanlon

Ceist:

44 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Health if he will outline the steps he proposes to take to regularise the situation of a couple (details supplied) in County Monaghan. [24382/96]

Limerick East): The administration of the registration system for marriages is primarily a matter for An t-Árd Chláraitheoir (Registrar-General) of Births, Deaths and Marriages and for local registrars who operate under his general direction. I am aware of the difficulties which have arisen in this case and in a small number of other similar instances. I very much regret the problems which these may have caused for the couples affected. Every effort is being made to find an early and satisfactory resolution to the problems involved. Officers of my Department and of the office of the Registrar General are in consultations with officers from the Department of Equality and Law Reform with a view to agreeing a solution which would, inter alia, deal with the difficulties which have arisen in this particular case.
