24 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if some form of grant assistance will be made available towards the cost of radon remediation in view of the trend of high radon levels emerging from the ongoing RPII survey. [3417/97]
I refer the Deputy to my answer to Question No. 176 of 23 January 1997.
The Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland's geographically-based national radon survey is progressing and is continuing to assist in identifying areas at greatest risk of high indoor radon levels. Recently, the results of the average radon concentrations for houses measured in counties Cavan, Dublin, Louth, Monaghan and Wicklow were published and these are available from the Institute. Data for the remaining counties will become available, on a phased basis between now and 1998.
The Department of the Environment has published a booklet "Radon in Buildings" which provides advice on preventive and remedial measures which can be undertaken in new and existing buildings.
I can make no commitment at present concerning grant assistance to householders in respect of remedial work to homes with high radon levels. The matter is being kept under review in the light of Exchequer commitments and overall budgetary constraints.
