Vol. 474 No. 7

Written Answers. - Electricity Costs.

Austin Deasy

Ceist:

45 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the comparative figures of the cost of generating electricity from the various energy sources such as coal, peat, oil, nuclear, wind and hydro-electricity. [3416/97]

The information requested by the Deputy is not publicly available, other than in very general terms, as it is of a commercially sensitive nature.

Taking into account such factors as fuel costs, capital costs and operation and maintenance costs, broadly speaking gas tends to be cheapest followed by oil and coal and then peat, wind and hydro. Nuclear is not an option in an Irish context.
