Vol. 474 No. 7

Written Answers. - Adoption Statistics.

Thomas P. Broughan

Ceist:

92 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Education if he will give a progress report on the archivists appointed to collate all files contained within her Department relating to the records of fostered, institutionalised or informally adopted persons; and if she will give details of the quality and detail contained in these files. [3952/97]

The project in question has its origins in the discovery of files in the National Archives, relating to the pre-1962 adoption of children born in Ireland, by families in the USA.

The archivist's examination of files in my Department relating to children placed in the old industrial and reformatory schools is nearing completion. Over 30,000 records have so far been examined and collated.

The level of detail contained in the files varies considerably from very detailed information on some children to brief summary type data in other cases.
