Vol. 474 No. 7

Written Answers. - Remedial Assistance.

Cecilia Keaveney

Ceist:

94 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Education the criteria set down by her Department for schools to become eligible for remedial assistance; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3954/97]

There is no automatic entitlement to remedial teacher posts. Where such posts become available, they are allocated on the basis of priority of need.

Remedial teacher posts are targeted on pupils who have been assessed as scoring at or below the 10th percentile on standardised tests of basic literacy and numeracy or who perform at an equivalent level. Account is taken of the number of such pupils in a school or group of schools in an area in determining priority of need.

In the current year, my Department is initiating a comprehensive study of remedial education, in co-operation with the partners in education. The outcome of this study will provide a valuable input into the future development of the service.
