Vol. 474 No. 7

Written Answers. - Garda Recruitment.

Noel Ahern

Ceist:

105 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Justice the number of gardaí recruited to date from the advertisement in May 1994; the number selected after interview from each group; and if she will give an analysis of those recruited by home addresses showing in particular the number of people, if any, recruited fom Dublin. [3986/97]

The number of gardaí recruited to date from the 1994 competition is 909. There were approximately 15,000 applicants for this competition.

The number selected after interview from each group is as follows:

Group1

161

Group2

175

Group3

182

Group4

160

Group5

137

Group6

158

Group7

138

Group8

114

Group9

89

Group10

100

Group11

79

Total

1,493

The results of group 12 interviews will be available shortly and group 13 interviews will commence next week.
The figures in the table above represent those candidates who were successful at the competitive interview. A number of factors, including withdrawal of applications and failure of postinterview medical examinations account for the difference between the number selected after interview and the number recruited to date. Also, a number of candidates would be awaiting call-up to the Garda training college.
Competitions for recruitment of Garda trainees are conducted by the Civil Service Commission on behalf of the Department of Justice and the Garda authorities. I am informed by the Civil Service Commission that information relating to recruitment competitions is not stored in such a way as to readily facilitate an analysis of those recruited by home address and that given the size of the applicant population, such an analysis would require the expenditure of a disproportionate amount of staff time which could not be justified.
