Vol. 474 No. 8

Written Answers. - Sellafield Nuclear Plant.

Thomas P. Broughan

Ceist:

120 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the further steps, if any, he is taking in the week beginning 10 February 1997 regarding recent incidents at Sellafield and the whole future of the Nirex facility. [4105/97]

I refer the Deputy to my response to Questions Nos. 39, 40, 42 and 49 yesterday, 12 February 1997, on the recent incidents at the Sellafield complex and in relation to Nirex's proposals for a rock characterisation facility.

In relation to further actions this week, I have instructed the RPII and my Department officials to obtain further detailed information in relation to the recent incidents. I have also sought a copy of the UK environment agency's draft agreement with Nirex on the provision of information by Nirex on investigations which might lead to an application to develop a redioactive waste repository.

The UK Department of the Environment has instituted a consultation process in relation to recent reports and scientific evidence which have come to light on Nirex proposals. The RPII and my Department officials will continue their review of this documentation and make a submission to the UK authorities.
