Written Answers. - Civil Service Staff.

Michael Woods

Ceist:

39 Dr. Woods asked the Minister for Finance the current position in relation to the number and percentage of women in each grade in the Civil Service; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24664/96]

The position at 31 December 1996, the latest date for which figures are available to me, is set out in the following table.

The total serving in the non-industrial Civil Service at 31 December 1996 can be broken into two categories i.e. main general service grades and other grades. Of a total figure serving in the main general service grades of 17,078.5, there are 10,660 females which represents 62.4 per cent. In the other grades category which totals 12,158, there are 3,042 females which represents 25 per cent.

The overall position within the total non-industrial Civil Service staff of 29,236.5 is that there are 13,702 females serving which represents 46.9 per cent.
