Vol. 474 No. 8

Written Answers. - Tax Yield.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

56 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Finance the expected revenue to be generated from the employment-training levy in 1997; the employment-training levy revenue for 1996 and 1995; the targets set and the actual expenditure for these years; the proposals, if any, he has to develop employment and training in 1997; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4069/97]

The revenue collected under the employment and training levy for the years 1995 and 1996 as well as the estimate for 1997 is as follows: 1995, £158.6 million; 1996, £164.5 million; 1997, £176 million.

The proceeds of the employment and training levy are allocated each year, in accordance with the Labour Service Act, 1987, to fund part of the activities of CERT, An Foras Áiseanna Saothair and certain programmes run by the Department of Education. Targeted and actual expenditures by the Department or the agencies are not directly linked to revenues collected under the levy.

While proposals for the development of employment and training in 1997 are primarily the responsibility of the Minister for Enterprise and Employment, the Deputy will be aware of the various measures designed to facilitate improvements in this area which I have announced in the last three budgets.
