Vol. 475 No. 1

Written Answers. - Departmental Staff.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

297 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Defence the number of permanent staff in his Department and each State agency under the aegis of his Department; the number of temporary staff; the number of staff on contract; and if Government staffing-embargo guidelines are adhered to in his Department and each State agency in this regard. [4516/97]

There are 425 permanent Civil Service staff currently employed in the Department. There is one civil servant seconded to act as Secretary to the board of Coiste An Asgard. The Army Pensions Board consists of a chairman and a civilian doctor as well as a doctor from the Army Medical Corps who were appointed in accordance with the provisions of the Army Pensions Act, 1927. There are no temporary staff employed in the Department.

There are four contract staff attached to my ministerial offices. The cost of these staff is shared jointly between the Departments of Defence and Marine, reflecting my dual ministerial role.
The staffing guidelines set out by the Department of Finance are being adhered to.
