Vol. 475 No. 2

Written Answers. - Tara (Meath) Statue.

Liam Lawlor

Ceist:

75 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht if he will seek an immediate resolution to the disagreement over the suitability of the statue of St. Patrick which was commissioned to replace the previous one at Tara, County Meath. [4681/97]

Following a competition for the commission of a statue of St. Patrick which was held among Irish artists, the five entries received were displayed at Tara and the views of the public obtained.

A recommendation was made by a selection committee comprising representatives of the local community, the Arts Council, the Association of Artists in Ireland, the Office of Public Works and my Department. I have accepted this recommendation and conveyed proposals to progress the matter to the local community. A definitive response is awaited.
