Vol. 475 No. 2

Written Answers. - Physical Education.

Theresa Ahearn

Ceist:

99 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Education the proposals, if any, she has to introduce sport science as a subject for examination; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [4615/97]

There are no plans to introduce sport science as a discrete subject on the Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate curriculum. However elements of sport science are taught within the existing physical education programmes.

The existing physical education syllabus which has been in operation since 1985 is currently under review by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment. Also it is intended to conduct a pilot project in conjunction with the work of the NCCA to investigate issues relating to implementation of a new syllabus.

Investigation of the feasibility of introducing physical education as an examination subject at junior or leaving certificate level will form part of the proposed pilot project.

This year, for the first time students will be examined in leisure studies (physical education) as part of their Leaving Certificate examination within the Leaving Certificate Applied programme. The examination which will be both practical and written, will deal with such topics as aquatics, games, outdoor education and leisure studies.
