Vol. 475 No. 6

Written Answers. - Irish Red Cross Society.

Michael McDowell

Ceist:

154 Mr. M. McDowell asked the Minister for Defence if his attention has been drawn to substantial disquiet about the attendance, participation and input of some State appointees to the council of the Irish Red Cross Society; if he will request those appointees who are not in a position to attend regularly and contribute substantially to the affairs of the society to consider relinquishing their appointments; and if he will consider these difficulties when making future appointments. [5498/97]

I am not aware of any particular difficulties regarding the attendance and participation of central council members in the affairs of the Irish Red Cross Society. Council meetings are normally held twice a year. Government carefully considers and nominates persons whom it deems will contribute to the betterment of the society. The tenure of office of members nominated by Government expires on 30 April 1997.
