Vol. 475 No. 6

Written Answers. - Sea Trout Fishermen.

Mary Wallace

Ceist:

156 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for the Marine if his attention has been drawn to the plight of the Dublin sea trout fishermen who derive 80 per cent of their income in the months of March, April and May due to algae on the nets after the end of May and who must cease sea trout fishing at that time and move further out from the shore for salmon fishing; if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that these sea trout fishermen will be put out of business if the proposed change from 12 February to 15 May is not altered back to at least 1 April. [5559/97]

The new conservation regulations introduced for the 1997 season in respect of salmon and trout complete the first phase of implementing the recommendations of the salmon management task force. There has been, at home and abroad, general acceptance that the measures introduced for 1997 are necessary.

Concern has been expressed about the specific and localised impact of the new conservation measures on draftnet estuarial fisheries. In addition to actively encouraging a local catchment management approach to cater for specific needs in each area, these overall concerns are currently being assessed from all relevant perspectives — and there will be further consultations on the matter. The concerns of fishermen engaged in the east coast sea trout fishery will be encompassed in this process of review and consultation.
