Vol. 475 No. 6

Written Answers. - Criminal Injuries Compensation.

Eric J. Byrne

Ceist:

40 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Justice the proposals, if any, she has for a reintroduction of the pain and suffering clause in the criminal injuries compensation scheme; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [5368/97]

The question of restoration of the pain and suffering clause is an important issue that is being considered as part of a review of the crinminal injuries compensation scheme. Work on the review, which has involved research into other compensation schemes both in this jurisdiction and abroad, is continuing in my Department and I expect to receive a report shortly, which will set out the options open to the Government.

Any proposals which I might have, following detailed examination of these matters, will have to be considered and approved by the Government before being announced in the normal way.
