55 Dr. McDaid asked the Minister for Justice the number of arrests and detentions of suspected persons under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939, in each of the years from 1994 to 1996; and the number of persons who have been charged while detained under this section in the same period. The number of arrests under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939, in each of the years 1994, 1995 and 1,996 were 1,054, 937 and 1,395, respectively.
I am informed by the Garda authorities that statistics relating to the number of persons arrested under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939, and who were subsequently charged are not readily available and would have to be complied specially at a cost of a disproportionate amount of Garda resources.
