Vol. 475 No. 6

Written Answers. - Garda Specialist Unit.

Tom Kitt

Ceist:

59 Mr. T. Kitt asked the Minister for Justice if she will request the Garda Commissioner to establish a specialist unit to combat the major computer component thefts which have taken place in recent months. [5445/97]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that a specialist unit has been established to deal specifically with the theft of computer component parts throughout the country.

This unit operates under the direction of the Detective Chief Superintendent, National Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Harcourt Square. It comprises personnel drawn from the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation and a number of Garda divisions throughout the country.

The Garda advise me that progress has been made in the most recent case involving the theft of hard disk computer drives at Swords, County Dublin on 11 February 1997. A substantial amount of this property has been recovered in a joint operation between the Garda Síochána and police in the United Kingdom.
