Vol. 475 No. 6

Written Answers. - Commemorative Events.

Peadar Clohessy

Ceist:

68 Mr. Clohessy asked the Minister for Justice the plans, if any, she has to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the foundations of the Garda Síochána; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [5477/97]

I have consulted the Garda authorities on the matter and they have informed me that there are a number of events planned to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the foundation of the Garda Síochána.

A series of concerts by the band of the Garda Síochána will be held throughout all the Garda regions, with each region preparing its own brochure and programme. In conjunction with the concerts, the curator of the Garda Museum will provide an information display on the Garda Síochána at most of the venues. Details of these concerts are as follows:

The band of the Garda Síochána are also to produce a commemorative compact disc and cassette. Also during this year a commemorative stamp and call card are to be produced.
In Letterkenny a heritage centre has already been formally opened by the Commissioner. The centre is located in Letterkenny Garda Station and traces the development of the Garda Síochána in the area. It is open to the public. On 17 August 1997, it is planned to hold an open day at Dublin Castle to commemorate the handing over of Dublin Castle to the Garda Síochána and officially open the Garda Síochána Museum which is located at Dublin Castle. A number of books, some by members of the force, are to be published this year and the Garda Management publication "Communique" will, in its June issue, contain a special history of the 75 years of the Garda Síochána.
Garda Síochána sports and cultural organisations such as Coiste Siamsa and the International Police Association will also celebrate the founding of the Garda Síochána through various events. The Garda choir held a concert in February 1997.
