Vol. 475 No. 8

Written Answers. - School Computer Facilities.

Derek McDowell

Ceist:

148 Mr. D. McDowell asked the Minister for Education whether she will accede to an application for improved computer facilities at a college (details supplied) in Dublin 5. [6105/97]

There are a number of schemes under which second level schools may be given specific assistance in acquiring computer equipment. These are the leaving certificate vocational programme and leaving certificate applied equipment grant scheme, the school administration project and grant scheme for the provision of equipment for pupils with certain disabilities. The school in question has recently benefited under the school administration project and the scheme for pupils with disabilities. I understand that the school has not applied to participate in either the leaving certificate vocational programme or the leaving certificate applied.

Costs associated with the purchase of computers may at the discretion of schools be funded from their general running costs grant. The basic second level per capita running cost grant has increased from £150 in 1993 to £177 currently. As this school is designated as disadvantaged the level of per capita grant is £207. An additional grant of £50 per annum has also been paid to the school in question in respect of each student on its transition year programme.
