Vol. 475 No. 8

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

John Ellis

Ceist:

171 Mr. Ellis asked the Minister for Justice the cost of providing cash escorts for the banking system in each of the years from 1994 to 1996. [6184/97]

Noel Treacy

Ceist:

179 Mr. N. Treacy asked the Minister for Justice the amount of Garda time taken up with cash escorts; the amount currently paid to the Exchequer towards the cost of this service; if the fees paid cover the cost of the service; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [6274/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 171 and 179 together.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the manpower costs involved in providing Garda escorts of cash to and from the associated banks in 1994 was in the order of £700,000. The equivalent costs in respect of the years 1995 and 1996 are not readily available but I will communicate with the Deputies when this information comes to hand from the Garda authorities. The contributions sought by the Minister for Finance in his Budget Statement and made by the associated banks towards the costs of Garda escorts of cash in transit amounted to £500,000 in 1994 and £750,000 in each of the years 1995 and 1996.
