Vol. 475 No. 8

Written Answers. - Garda Pensions.

John O'Donoghue

Ceist:

192 Mr. O'Donoghue asked the Minister for Justice whether the Commission on Public Service Pensions, appointed by her, has reported on the pension terms of members of the Garda Síochána; the steps, if any, she will take arising from this report; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [6312/97]

The membership and terms of reference of the Commission on Public Service Pensions were announced by the Minister for Finance in February 1996. The commission is to examine and report on the occupational pension arrangements for public servants having regard to the emerging costs of public service pension scheme benefits, and claims for improvement in those benefits. Its terms of reference include the Garda Síochána as well as public servants employed in the Civil Service, non-industrial and industrial, Defence Forces, education, health and local authority services. The commission is to present its report to Government in 1998. I will consider the implications of the report for the Garda Síochána pension scheme at that time.
