Vol. 475 No. 8

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

John O'Donoghue

Ceist:

204 Mr. O'Donoghue asked the Minister for Justice the number and rank of gardaí currently working for the United Nations outside the State; the number in each location; the duration of their contracts; the number involved for previous years; the number of volunteers for these postings; and whether the full costs were paid by the United Nations and the benefits gained by this country. [6326/97]

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Parliamentary Question No. 228 of 2 April 1996, volume 463, No. 6, column 1670, in which similar details concerning duty with the United Nations were requested. The number and rank of members currently serving on UN Missions in Bosnia has dropped by one with the return in January 1997 of an Assistant Commissioner from Bosnia Herzegovina. We continue to have 15 members serving with the United Nations in Cyprus and there are 15 members, one inspector, three sergeants and 11 gardaí, also serving in Eastern Slavonia bringing the total number serving outside the State on UN missions to 60 members.

The overseas allowance as stated in my previous reply has been adjusted and can vary from £12.04 to £19.49 per day. Approximately 405 members of the Garda Síochána have served with UN missions since the first Garda contingent was deployed on UN duty in April 1989. The other information requested by the Deputy is as set out in my previous reply.
