Vol. 476 No. 5

Written Answers - School Staffing.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

182 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education the reason a school (details supplied) in County Mayo with 20 pupils has only one teacher in view of the fact that other schools with less pupils have two teachers. [7661/97]

The staffing of a primary school for a particular year is determined by the enrolment of the school on 30 September of the previous year. The enrolment of the school to which the Deputy refers on 30 September 1995 was 17 pupils. This enrolment warrants a staffing in the current school year of a principal only.

Two-teacher schools which were due to lose their first assistant's post in June 1996 because of declining enrolments, and thus become one-teacher schools, were allowed as an exceptional measure to retain their posts for the 1996-97 school year. This situation will be re-examined in the context of the staffing arrangements for the 1997-98 school year.
