Vol. 476 No. 5

Written Answers - Higher Education Grants.

Cecilia Keaveney

Ceist:

186 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Education whether a maintenance grant is payable to a person (details supplied) who is attending college in Leicester, England, in view of the fact that students attending the same course at college in Northern Ireland are eligible; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [7705/97]

The 1996 student support schemes provided for the extension of means tested maintenance grants to students pursuing full-time undergraduate courses of at least two years duration in another EU member state. The course must be pursued in a university or third level institution which is maintained or assisted by recurrent grants from public funds, with the following exceptions: (i) courses in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and teacher training courses, including those leading to the award of bachelor of education; (ii) courses on colleges of further and higher education; (iii) courses provided in colleges in Britain which are offered in private commercial third level colleges in Ireland and which are validated by that British college; (iv) courses in colleges akin to private commercial colleges in Ireland.

Officials of my Department have been in contact with Donegal County Council and Donegal Vocational Education Committee regarding the case referred to by the Deputy. I understand that no record exists of an application for student support having been received from the student in question in respect of the 1996-97 academic year.
