Vol. 476 No. 5

Written Answers - Schools Building Projects.

Mary Harney

Ceist:

188 Miss Harney asked the Minister for Education the reason a school (details supplied) in County Clare, which had been included in her Department's pre-tender list and priority list in 1996, is no longer on her Department's priority list, in view of the fact that the conditions at the school have been condemned by the Mid-Western Health Board. [7709/97]

A building project for the school referred to by the Deputy still remains on the Department's priority list of schools requiring urgent attention. Recently I approved projects for 27 such schools which were included on a capital programme to proceed to tender and contract stages.

However, due to budgetary constraints, it was not possible to include all deserving projects in the first round of projects which were allowed to proceed to tender stage. I expect to release a number of additional projects to tender and contract on a phased basis later this year and the project at the school referred to by the Deputy will receive every consideration at the appropriate time.
