Vol. 476 No. 5

Written Answers - School Transport.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

191 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education if a child (details supplied) in County Mayo, who is due to start school in September 1997, is entitled to assistance towards the cost of travelling to school in view of the fact that the child lives almost three miles away from the school but there is no school bus servicing that area, no other children in the area attending school and the parents will have to pay a taxi to ferry their child to school. [7720/97]

A remote area transport grant may be paid towards the cost of private transport arrangements where a pupil resides at least three miles from the nearest appropriate school and is outside the range of school transport.

My Department has requested a report from Bus Éireann concerning the pupil referred to by the Deputy. On receipt of this report, the Deputy will be informed of the outcome.
