Vol. 476 No. 5

Written Answers - Schools Refurbishment.

Robert Molloy

Ceist:

192 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the overcrowding and poor fabric of the building at Collinamuck national school, County Galway; the reason approval has not been granted to date to invite tenders for the reconstruction and extension of this school; if approval will issue in the near future in this regard; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [7735/97]

Mary Harney

Ceist:

193 Miss Harney asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the overcrowding and poor fabric of the building at Collinamuck national school, County Galway; the reason approval has not been granted to date, to invite tenders for the reconstruction and extension of this school; if approval will issue in the near future in this regard; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [7736/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 192 and 193 together.

I am aware of the condition of Collinamuck national school, County Galway. I included a project for the extension and refurbishment of this school in my Department's capital programme. All of the planning work is now complete and the project is ready for tender.
The reason approval has not been given to date is that I am dealing with a significant backlog of projects arising out of the massive cuts in the capital funding of primary schools in the 1988-92 period and, due to budgetary constraints, it is not possible for me to release all deserving projects to tender and contract together.
I hope to release a number of projects to tender and contract on a phased basis later this year and the school will receive every consideration at the time.
