Vol. 476 No. 5

Written Answers - Job Creation Costs.

Willie O'Dea

Ceist:

230 Mr. O'Dea asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the average cost of job creation in the mid-west region in comparison with the other industrial regions in the country for overseas large industry, indigenous industry, small industry and jobs created by the County Enterprise Boards. [7420/97]

The grant cost per full-time job equivalent created in county enterprise board supported enterprises in the eight regions of the State from the establishment of the county enterprise boards in 1993 to the end of 1996 was as follows:

Region

Grant Cost Per Job

£

Border Region

4,341

Dublin Region

3,293

Mid-East Region

3,126

Midland Region

3,691

Mid-West Region

3,563

South-East Region

4,391

South-West Region

3,871

West Region

2,756

The average costs per job for the industrial development agencies under the aegis of my Department are as follows:

Agency

Average Cost Per Job

Calculating Period

IDA Ireland

11,920

1990-96

Forbairt

9,818

1990-96

Shannon Development

11,272

1989-95

Information regarding cost per job is compiled by IDA Ireland and Forbairt on a national basis and not on a regional basis. There is no breakdown available between indigenous and overseas cost per job figures in respect of Forbairt client companies.
Shannon Development's remit covers an area larger than the mid-west region as it encompasses south west Offaly and north Kerry as well as Limerick, Clare and North Tipperary. Shannon Development cost per job is calculated over the period 1989-95 which are the latest figures available.
It will be apparent that the county enterprise board figures are not directly comparable with those of the other agencies because of the shorter time period involved.
