Vol. 476 No. 5

Written Answers - Nurses' Pay and Conditions.

Michael P. Kitt

Ceist:

69 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Minister for Finance the capital projects and Department schemes, if any, to be reviewed in order to achieve savings for extra pay increases to the nursing profession. [7625/97]

The Cabinet Budget and Economic Committee at its meeting on 13 March, 1997 agreed measures to offset the full additional cost of implementing the Labour Court recommendation on nurses' pay and conditions, which is estimated at £49 million in 1997. These measures involved across the board pro-rata reductions on all ministerial Vote group allocations.

The 1997 expenditure allocations, incorporating these measures, were approved by the Government at its meeting on 19 March. It is intended that the 1997 Revised Estimates Volume and Public Capital Programme giving the details of the final agreed allocations at programme level will be published on 26 March or as soon as possible thereafter.
