Vol. 477 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Mary Wallace

Ceist:

141 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Education the current position in relation to the numbers at a national school (details supplied) in County Meath for 1 September 1997, where there is currently 181 pupils in the boys' school and 184 in the girls' school, with seven teachers in each school and a danger that both schools which are under the one roof will lose a teacher each in September 1997 in spite of the fact that Meath County Council is building 52 extra houses in the parish in 1997 and thereby the teachers will be required again in 1998; if there is any possibility to retain the teachers in both schools in view of the fact that there is clear evidence in the parish that the numbers will rise again the following year; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [8509/97]

No decision has yet been made regarding the staffing allocations for primary schools for the 1997-98 school year. It is anticipated that final decisions in this matter will be made shortly.

The staffing of a primary school for any year is determined by reference to the enrolment on 30 September of the previous year. Accordingly, if the schools in question did not attain the required enrolments in September 1996 the retention of posts cannot be assured from September 1997.
