Vol. 477 No. 1

Written Answers. - Degree Courses.

Helen Keogh

Ceist:

165 Ms Keogh asked the Minister for Education the reason the intake for the bachelor of education in home economics is limited to 25 per annum, in view of the fact that demand exceeds the number of places by a ratio of six to one; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [8618/97]

I wish to clarify that, in recent years, the total first-year intake to the course for the Bachelor of Education degree in the two colleges of education for home economics has been 50 per annum. A review group, under the auspices of the Higher Education Authority, is at present, examining the question of teacher supply and demand in the second level sector including teachers of home economics. When the report of this review group is available, the intake to the course, etc. will be re-examined.
