Written Answers. - BSE Compensation.
The £30 million BSE compensation package was negotiated under the Irish Presidency and the relevant council regulation was published in the Official Journal of the European Communities on 17 December 1996. The detailed rules for the measure were adopted at the meeting of the Beef Management Committee on 17 January 1997 and were published in the official journal on 6 February 1997.
Agrimonetary compensation was agreed by the Council of Agriculture Ministers at its meeting from 17-19 March under the provisions of Article 9 of Council Regulation 3813/92. However, the regulation will not be formally adopted for some weeks. It is expected that the detailed implementing rules will be adopted by the Agri-monetary Management Committee in April. The Commission will then officially approve my Department's detailed request for the payment of aid.
