The definitive source of statistics on employment and unemployment is the labour force survey (LFS). This survey provides results for regions but, unfortunately, does not give results at county level. The latest LFS results relate to April 1996. Results for the Border region (which includes Sligo and Leitrim) in April 1994, 1995 and 1996 are set out in the following table:

The monthly live register provides data on claimants for unemployment assistance, unemployment benefit and other registrants at each social welfare local office. However, the live register is not an accurate indicator of the level of unemployment. The live register totals for counties Sligo and Leitrim at the end of December 1993, 1994, 1995 and 1996 are set out in the following table:
