Vol. 477 No. 1

Written Answers. - Public Works Contracts.

Noel Dempsey

Ceist:

95 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for Finance the steps, if any, he has taken to include conciliation in the construction contracts under his Department in view of the fact that conciliation is now a mandatory step in the dispute resolution process in the Institution of Engineers of Ireland Conditions of Contract, Fourth Edition 1995 and the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland, Conditions of Contract, 1988 Edition (Revised 1996). [8491/97]

The standard conditions of contracts for public works provide for arbitration, but do not provide for alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, including conciliation. The Strategic Review Committee on the Construction Industry will be addressing the question of such mechanisms, inter alia, in the context of its report to the Minister for the Environment which is expected shortly.
