Vol. 477 No. 2

Written Answers - Nursing Education.

Rory O'Hanlon

Ceist:

187 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Education the current status of the fourth year in university for nursing students; if it will commence at the beginning of the academic year 1997-98; the funding arrangements for the course; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [8969/97]

In October 1994 a revised programme for basic pre-registration nurse education and training was introduced on a pilot basis. This programme is operated by the Western Health Board and University College Galway at University Hospital Galway. It consists of a three year course which leads to a diploma in Nursing Studies. Operation of the new diploma programme has been extended to a number of other colleges of nursing in association with local higher education institutions. Successful completion of the programme leads to registration with an Bord Altranais. The programmes are being funded by the regional health boards.

Dublin City University is in the current academic year providing a one year course which enables holders of the three year diploma to obtain a degree of Bachelor of Nursing Studies. For registered nurses who qualified before the diploma was initiated, access modules are available to enable them to qualify for entry to the one year course. Courses are provided on a part-time basis and it is proposed to provide a distance education programme leading to the same award with registration in May 1997. These courses are self-financing. No other proposals have been received from colleges in this regard to date.
